SAFETY POLICIES FOR KIDS & YOUTH

Making sure the Y is safe for kids and families is fundamental to all that we do. Throughout our programs, in our facilities, and with carefully trained staff we implement strict policies to ensure safety. A few of them are described below.

PARENTAL SUPERVISION

Members under 12 years old must be supervised by an adult when visiting the facility; child must be within an arm’s length of the adult. Adult members must be physically present in the pool with children 12 years old and younger. A parent swim pass is available for parents of our youth members for a daily cost of $8.

CHILD WATCH

Family-type members have the benefit of a 2 hour daily period of time to utilize child watch. For children ages 6 weeks-9 years old. This feature is available for $8 to Youth Members. Parents must remain in the Y facility. Children must be signed in and parents/guardians must indicate where in the facility they will be. Only the adult signing in the child is authorized to do sign out.

YOUTH & TEEN MEMBER FACILITY USAGE GUIDELINES

We believe in youth development and healthy living. We encourage kids to begin to workout in our Wellness Centers beginning at age 8. YMCA staff are committed to teaching youth how to properly use equipment and experience the many benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle.

There is a policy in place to protect youth, ages 8-12, interested in working out in our Wellness Centers, participating in our Pools, Gymnasiums, and Teen Centers. We ask that youth go through a fitness orientation with our staff, to ensure a clear understanding of the equipment and safe use of the wellness center environment. Please review our youth & teens facility usage guidelines.

YOUTH & TEEN WELLNESS CENTER ORIENTATIONS

AGES 8-9
Children ages 8-9 are welcome to use all size-appropriate cardio equipment and the stretching area with an adult/parent partner after taking our free Cardio Kids class (no weights, no machines, no functional training, only cardio equipment). Cardio Kids class is set up by appointment and is free to members. For more information and to sign up, contact your branch’s Health & Wellness Director. Following the completion of Cardio Kids, parent/adult must be working out with, and be with their child in the Wellness Center. The parent may not be in another area of the Wellness Center or working out individually. Partner workout is the key to success for 8-9 year olds.

AGES 10-12
Children ages 10-12 are welcome to use all areas of the Wellness Centers with an parent/adult partner after taking our free Youth Strength Training (YST) Class. The parent/adult partner must be with the child, working out alongside at all times. This age group is permitted to use weights, functional training, equipment, and all machines alongside parent/adult partner. APPROPRIATE ATTIRE POLICY

Shirts and closed-toe shoes are required to be worn in our Health & Wellness areas with the exception of the indoor and outdoor pool where we require appropriate bathing suit attire.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

The safety of our members and staff is a priority for our YMCA. During extreme weather conditions we employ an inclement weather policy, using our website home page and branch home pages to alert members of any facility closings or delays and class cancellations.

FACILITY CLOSINGS AND DELAYED OPENINGS

The Hockomock Area YMCA will monitor the weather during the winter months and will be mindful of the safety of our members and staff when deciding to continue a consistent class schedule or to modify the schedule based on the weather conditions.

For all group exercise classes, youth programming and adult programming, the Hockomock Area YMCA will make a decision two hours prior to the start of class and will notify all participants via our website and our Facebook pages.

In the case that the YMCA must close, this communication will be done through our website, Facebook pages and on our phone messages.

CHILD CARE CANCELLATIONS AND DELAYS

It is our intention to operate Child Care and our school-age School’s Out program during regularly scheduled hours. Please be sure to provide your contact information and cell phone number to the facilitator of your child’s program who will alert you in case of any delay or cancellation.
