A Look Back Legends Golf Classic 2017

LEGENDS GOLF WAS A GREAT DAY
IN SUPPORT OF INTEGRATION

Our 8th annual Legends Golf Classic was held at TPC Boston on October 10th. It was a beautiful day filled with fun and fellowship in support of our Integration Initiative. Special thanks to all the New England Sports Legends for their continued support, Pete Brock and the New England Patriots Alumni Club, TPC Boston and all of our generous and committed donors and volunteers.

Since 2004, more than 1,000 children and families have benefited from our Integration Initiative as we continue to foster a culture of inclusion at our Y.

Enjoy this video with highlights from this very special day. It is sure to bring a smile to your face.

Louise’s Story

We are excited to announce that all 3 of our branches offer a 10-week weight loss program called Weigh to Change.

Meet Louise McAuliffe, one of our success stories from our spring 2017 program. She lost a total of 16lbs. and 28.1 inches. Here is her story:

10 weeks ago I was introduced to the Weigh to Change motto, “I do this for me.” I have 3 jobs: wife, mom & employee… at my best I can do those jobs well at any given time. However, notice there is no mention of “me”.

I was overweight, unmotivated, stressed out, & often grumpy. I was making terrible food choices & definitely not practicing portion control. Focusing on my family & job has always made it difficult for me to fit in any type of exercise,.. but I know that was just an excuse. I read about the Weigh to Change program on my Y’s Facebook page & decided to call for info.

So many things appealed to me about the program… the early mornings, 1 night a week, early Saturdays, the nutritionist, the support. I decided to sign up even before the information night.

I love the program. It’s a lot of work, but boy, it was worth it! I felt great after each session. The comraderie of fellow participants & support from coaches were amazing. I learned so much. I now add veggies to smoothies for a delicious breakfast, have salad for lunch almost every day, and eat smaller portions of healthy food for dinner.

I am thrilled to say that I have lost a total of 16 lbs. & 28.1 inches! I now wear clothes I haven’t worn in years, & people are taking notice! My 13 year old daughter exclaimed, “Mom, you’re sticking with it this time, you look great!” My 8 year old daughter wants to come to classes with me. I have even lowered my blood pressure. This program has given me so much energy & I deal with my stress so much easier. I feel great! I am so glad I chose to “do this for me!”

A Look Back at Summer

THE BEST SUMMER EVER

We’re all so proud of our dedicated camp staff who served for eleven weeks this past summer as young leaders and role models to youth from the 15 communities we are privileged to serve. More than 300 counselors were hired by our YMCA this year and for some, this was their first job.

Many staff members came to our Y as campers and return to make their impact as counselors. To me, that’s a special part of the tradition of summer camp that we celebrate each year.

Enjoy this brief video that highlights a day at summer camp at the Hockomoock Area YMCA. The smiles and laughter are sure to bring a smile to your face. And thank you for all you do in support of our YMCA.

Sincerely,

Ed Hurley

Andrea Ambs bestowed 2017 Legacy of Caring Award

Every year at Lake Pearl in Wrentham, the Hockomock Area YMCA holds its annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon to recognize valued employees who have worked at the YMCA for 10 years or more. 129 staff members were celebrated at this year’s luncheon, the group representing 1,887 years of unwavering dedication to the Y. One of those honored employees was Andrea Ambs, who was accorded the Marge Kraskouskas Legacy of Caring Award.

An Invensys Foxboro Branch and North Attleboro Branch fitness trainer for ten years, Andrea is an integral part of wellness programs including LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, diabetes prevention, and group exercise classes.

The award, named for former Hockomock Area YMCA Human Resources Vice President Marge Kraskouskas, recognizes a staff member for unyielding passion and commitment to the mission and values of the Y.

Hockomock Area YMCA President Ed Hurley presented Ambs with the award, remarking that “there are so many things that Andrea has done, and every time I see her the compassion, the passion, and the smile is always there. And I can’t tell you how excited I am to recognize someone who has had a huge impact on our YMCA, on the folks that she works with every day, and on inspiring me.”

Upon receiving the award, Andrea, a Foxboro resident, humbly expressed her surprise. “This is very unexpected, so thank you,” said Ambs. “I feel like I work with all of you who do so much more to deserve this than I do.”

At last year’s event, the Legacy of Caring Award was given to George Johnson Jr. and in 2015, the award was given to Ann Maitland.

Make A Difference

HELP PROVIDE MORE KIDS WITH A SUMMER CAMP EXPERIENCE

There is something magical about summer camp that every child needs and deserves. Our staff role models provide kids with important social development and life lessons critical to their development. However, many families – for a variety of reasons – do not have the means to provide a summer camp experience for their kids.

You can maximize your impact on kids in our community now more than ever. The Spier Family has announced a summer camp challenge and will match every donation between July 31st and August 14th up to $25,000. With your help and the support from the Spier Family, we look forward to raising $50,000 to provide more kids an opportunity to experience their best summer ever at camp this August.

Our Y is committed to strengthening community and ensuring everyone regardless of ability to pay has the opportunity to thrive. This is our mission and our cause. And with your help another great example of our Y being a place where cause meets community. Together we can make a difference in the lives of local kids and families this summer.

Make Your Gift Today!

For more information, stop by any of our Y branches.

Thank you,

Ed Hurley
President, Hockomock Area YMCA
